CGI Sliding & Patio Doors: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
CGI sliding and patio doors in Riverside typically run $1,800 to $4,200 installed depending on size, glass package, and whether you’re replacing just the panel or the full frame. We stock CGI-compatible rollers, tracks, locks, handles, and weatherstripping, and in most cases we can have a failed part swapped the same week you call (760) 624-3669. The way Riverside owners usually find us is the same way every time: a door that started dragging six months ago now needs both hands and a knee to budge, or the lock no longer catches, or the glass fogs between the panes and won’t clear.
If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place. This page covers which CGI models we work on, what fails first, what replacement costs, and what you can safely check yourself versus what genuinely needs a pro.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
CGI’s sliding and patio door lines in Southern California are mostly built around two families: the Tropic line (impact-rated, common in Riverside homes that replaced original sliders after a storm or an insurance requirement) and the Estate/Sentinel lines (non-impact but still engineered for the heat and UV we get in the Inland Empire). Within those lines, panel widths are typically 36, 48, 60, or 72 inches, and the most common configuration we see in Riverside is a two-panel slider, 72 by 80 inches, with one fixed panel and one active.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: CGI roller assemblies changed design around 2016. Pre-2016 rollers use a stamped steel housing with a press-in axle. Post-2016 units use a cast zinc housing with a snap-in adjustable height post. They do not interchange. If you have a 2015 door and you buy a 2018 roller online, it won’t seat, and you’ll be back where you started. This is exactly why we always pull the existing roller and match it physically before ordering, regardless of what the model label says.
On OEM versus aftermarket: for CGI impact doors, we recommend OEM or OEM-equivalent parts, particularly on the interlock and the shoot bolt assemblies. The tolerances on impact-rated doors are tighter because the door has to stay put in a blow, and a generic aftermarket interlock that’s a millimeter off will rattle and eventually fail. On non-impact doors, quality aftermarket rollers and weatherstripping are often fine, and we’ll tell you when they’re not.
To identify your model, open the fixed panel and look at the top rail of the active panel. CGI stamps the model and build date there on most doors built after 2005. If the stamp has worn off, measure the panel width to the nearest inch and take a photo of the roller housing from underneath; that’s usually enough for us to identify it. We’re an independent service provider and not affiliated with CGI, but we’ve handled enough of their doors in Riverside to know the hardware by sight.
Signs Your CGI Sliding & Patio Door Is Failing
- The door drags or takes two hands to open. This is nearly always the rollers. Riverside’s fine dust works into the roller bearings, the grease dries out, and the steel race scores. By the time you feel the drag, the bearings are shot and the roller wheel has usually flat-spotted.
- The door lifts when you lock it. That lift is a tell that the roller height adjustment is maxed out and the panel has sagged. It’s common on older CGI doors where the bottom rail has settled. Continuing to use the lock as a pry bar just bends the lock hook and damages the receiver.
- You feel a draft along the edge even when it’s closed. The interlock weatherstrip on CGI sliders compresses over time and the wool pile wears flat. In Riverside summers, that’s a real cost: your AC is running harder to cool air that’s leaking through a quarter-inch gap at the meeting stile.
- The lock catches but won’t fully seat, or a gap shows at the latch point. Most often it’s a worn shoot bolt or a misaligned receiver plate. The bolt is a sacrificial part; it’s designed to take the force of the door being yanked against the lock, and after a few years of that it deforms.
- Condensation between the panes that never clears. That’s a failed seal on the insulated glass unit. On CGI doors, this generally means glass replacement rather than a hardware swap, and it’s worth calling about because the glass on impact-rated doors is the single most expensive component.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we quote for CGI sliding door repairs and replacements in Riverside, parts and labor together:
- Roller assembly replacement (both panels): $240 – $410 installed
- Lock and handle set replacement: $180 – $320 installed
- Track replacement (72″ two-panel): $380 – $620 installed
- Weatherstripping and interlock replacement: $150 – $280 installed
- Full panel replacement (glass included, non-impact): $1,800 – $2,900 installed
- Full panel replacement (impact-rated Tropic line): $2,600 – $4,200 installed
The range comes down to panel size, impact versus non-impact glass, and whether the frame itself is salvageable. A slider that’s sagged badly enough can deform the bottom track, and replacing the roller alone won’t fix the glide if the track is bowed. That’s why we always inspect the track and the frame before we give you a number. You get the written price before any work starts, and nothing changes at the door.
Westlight Windows & Doors is an independently owned and operated Kingswell location, and every job is backed by the Kingswell Guarantee: a written price before work, a committed arrival window, a clean job site, and a written guarantee on the completed work. If the repair fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s automatic, no negotiating.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Open the door and look down the bottom rail: if you see white dust or fine metal shavings, that’s a dead roller bearing. Run a finger along the track; a groove worn into the aluminum or a visible dip means the track is gone, not just the roller. And try lifting the active panel straight up; if it lifts more than an eighth of an inch, the adjustment or the roller housing is worn beyond what a homeowner should be forcing.
Where DIY goes wrong on CGI doors, in our experience, is the panel removal. A 72-inch impact-rated panel weighs well over 200 pounds, and pulling it out of the frame safely takes two people and the right lift sequence. We’ve been called out after more than one Riverside homeowner got the panel out and then couldn’t get it back in because the adjustment screw stripped. Lifting a patio door panel is not a one-person job, and the glass in these is not forgiving if it tips.
If you’ve checked and the roller’s clearly gone, call us at (760) 624-3669 and we’ll match the assembly to what’s actually in the door. Owen Satterfield has been measuring these the same way since he learned finish carpentry at Rio Hondo College: measure it right the first time, and the rest takes care of itself.
An honest note on Riverside summers: a sliding door that leaks air is a quieter problem than a broken AC, but it works against you every day. The heat that pours through a south-facing slider in July is a fine argument for Low-E glass and a tight interlock seal. We keep weatherstrip for CGI doors on the truck, and we’ll tell you straight if the door is worth repairing or if you’re better off putting that money toward a replacement panel.
FAQs
CGI sliding door rollers in Riverside typically last 7 to 12 years before the bearings wear, though doors that face a dirt yard or get sandy wind from the foothills can degrade faster. The fine dust in the Inland Empire is harder on roller bearings than coastal air, because it works into the race and dries out the grease. If your door is 10 years old and starting to drag, the rollers are at the end of their normal life, and replacing them now prevents track damage that costs a lot more. Call (760) 624-3669 for an exact diagnosis; estimates are free.
Most CGI sliding doors are repairable, and the decision comes down to three things: frame condition, track wear, and glass seal failure. Failed rollers, worn locks, and dead weatherstripping are all part-level repairs that cost a few hundred dollars, not a few thousand. If the frame is straight and the track isn’t bowed, we repair rather than replace, because a well-maintained CGI door can serve 25 years or more. When we tell you a replacement makes more sense, it’s because the numbers work out in your favor over the long run, not because we’d rather sell a door. Call (760) 624-3669 and we’ll give you the straight answer on yours.
A roller, lock, or weatherstrip replacement on a CGI sliding door typically takes 60 to 90 minutes once we have the right part matched, and we can usually do the whole job in a single visit. If the track also needs replacement, add another hour. We carry common CGI hardware on the truck, and for unusual part numbers we’ll verify the physical match before we order so we don’t show up with the wrong assembly. Call (760) 624-3669 and we’ll tell you what we’d plan for your specific door.
We stock the most common CGI sliding and patio door hardware for Riverside homes: roller assemblies for pre- and post-2016 doors, lock and handle sets, shoot bolts, track materials, and interlock weatherstrip in standard lengths. Odd sizes and some impact-rated Tropic line components are special order, and in those cases we confirm compatibility with the existing hardware before anything is ordered. We’re an independent service provider, not a CGI factory outlet, but we match parts accurately because we replace them in Riverside every week. If you need a part, call (760) 624-3669 and we’ll check the truck first.
