Mr-Glass Door Installation: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
We install and replace Mr-Glass door hardware and glass components throughout Riverside, and a typical Mr-Glass door installation runs between $350 and $1,200 installed, depending on the part and the door’s age. Most jobs are completed in a single visit. The usual story we hear: a homeowner notices the door dragging, a handle going loose, or glass fogging between the panes, and they realize the original Mr-Glass part is no longer doing its job.
Here’s what to know before you spend a dime: not every Mr-Glass door uses the same hinge geometry, and Riverside’s summer heat plus our hard water make certain components fail years earlier than they would in a milder climate. We’ll walk through what fails, what it costs, and what’s actually worth fixing. We’re an independent Riverside company, not a Mr-Glass dealer or affiliate, so our only interest is getting your door working right.
Which Mr-Glass Models This Applies To
Mr-Glass doors in the Southern California market tend to fall into two camps: the aluminum-framed patio sliders common in Riverside ranch homes built from the 1970s through the 1990s, and the vinyl-framed hinged doors we see more in newer construction and townhome communities across the city. The hardware between those two is not interchangeable, and that’s the first compatibility gotcha.
How to identify your door: open the door and look at the edge of the panel, near the top or bottom corner. You’ll find a small etched or printed label with a series number. Write it down or take a photo before you call anyone. If the label has worn off, measure the glass thickness and the width of the door panel itself. A 1-inch thick door panel uses different roller hardware than a 1-3/8-inch panel, even within the same Mr-Glass line. We’ve pulled up to Riverside homes where the owner ordered a generic roller online, and it was 1/16-inch too tall for the track. Sixteenths matter.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Mr-Glass OEM parts are fine, but they’re not always the smartest buy. For rollers, hinges, and handle sets, we carry quality aftermarket equivalents that match or exceed the original specs at a better price. For glass units, we order Mr-Glass-spec insulated panels because the seal chemistry and spacer width have to match the frame exactly. Our trucks carry common Mr-Glass roller assemblies, handle sets, and weatherstripping, so we can often complete the swap in one trip without ordering.
Signs Your Mr-Glass Door Installation Is Failing
- The door scrapes or drags when you slide it. This usually means a roller has flattened or the bearing inside has seized. Riverside’s dry, dusty air works grit into the roller housing, and once the bearing binds, the wheel stops rolling and starts grinding against the track.
- The handle spins without engaging the latch. Inside the handle set is a square drive spindle that connects the lever to the latch mechanism. On Mr-Glass doors, that spindle is die-cast metal and rounds off over time, especially on the high-use patio door.
- The door doesn’t seal tight at the top or bottom corner. Mr-Glass door frames rely on compression weatherstripping, and Riverside’s heat cycles cause that strip to shrink and harden. Once it’s brittle, you’ll feel a draft or see daylight at the corner.
- Fog or moisture between the glass panes. This is a failed insulated glass unit, and it’s the one repair you can’t band-aid. The seal has broken and the desiccant inside is saturated. The glass has to be replaced, period.
- The door jumps the track or feels loose side-to-side. The bottom track on older Mr-Glass sliders wears unevenly, especially the inner lip. If the door rocks when you push on it, the track and rollers both need attention before the panel comes off entirely.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we charge in Riverside, and what drives the price:
- Roller replacement (sliding door): $180 – $320, including removing the panel, replacing both rollers, cleaning the track, and re-hanging the door plumb.
- Handle set replacement: $140 – $260, including a new interior and exterior handle matched to your Mr-Glass backset.
- Weatherstripping replacement: $90 – $180 per door, with new compression strip installed and adjusted.
- Insulated glass unit replacement: $400 – $900, depending on glass dimensions, low-e coating, and frame type.
- Full door re-install/track realignment: $300 – $600, for doors that have shifted out of square or have worn track sections.
The two biggest price drivers are glass width and whether the track needs sectioning. A tempered low-e unit for a 36-inch by 80-inch Mr-Glass door runs more than a standard clear unit, and it should, because Riverside’s west-facing patios take serious afternoon heat. Every quote you get from us includes the part, labor, haul-away of the old component, and a written warranty on the work. No change orders at the door. If your door uses a discontinued Mr-Glass frame profile, we’ll tell you before we quote, not after we open it up.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: run your finger along the bottom track and feel for pitting or flat spots, open and close the door five times and note exactly where it drags, and inspect the weatherstripping at the corners for cracks. Knowing what’s wrong helps us quote accurately over the phone.
What we don’t recommend: pulling the panel yourself. A Mr-Glass sliding door panel weighs 80 to 140 pounds, and once it’s off the track, it has no lateral support. We’ve repaired doors mangled by well-meaning DIY attempts where the panel tipped and bent the frame. That’s when a $200 roller job becomes a $1,500 door replacement. If the door is fogged, dragging badly, or off-track, call (760) 624-3669 and let one of our technicians handle it. We’ll give you a written price before any work starts, and the estimate is free.
FAQs
In Riverside, expect 12 to 18 years from original Mr-Glass rollers and weatherstripping, and 15 to 25 years from the insulated glass unit, assuming the door was installed square and the track stays clean. West-facing doors without shade tend to cycle through weatherstripping on the shorter end of that range because of afternoon sun exposure. Call (760) 624-3669 if your door is older than that and showing symptoms.
Some components, like rollers and weatherstripping, are always replaced rather than repaired because the failure is mechanical or material fatigue. Handles can sometimes be repaired if the issue is a loose set screw, but a rounded spindle means replacement. We’ll always tell you which applies before we do anything. Call us for an honest assessment, not an upsell.
Most roller, handle, and weatherstripping replacements are completed in under two hours including setup and cleanup. A glass unit replacement takes half a day because the new panel must be ordered to spec and then set with fresh sealant that needs time to cure. We’ll give you an arrival window and we show up in it, every time.
Yes, our trucks carry the most common Mr-Glass roller assemblies, handle sets, and compression weatherstripping for the door styles we see across Riverside, from the Arlington Heights ranch homes to the newer builds out toward Mission Grove. We also stock compatible parts for PGT, CGI, and CWS doors, and we can source Mr-Glass-spec glass units within a week. If you’re not sure what you have, call (760) 624-3669 and describe it, or send us a photo of the label.
